What Is Net Worth — and Why Does It Matter?
Net worth is the single most important number in personal finance. It tells you exactly where you stand by subtracting everything you owe from everything you own.
Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities
A positive net worth means your assets exceed your debts. Growing it consistently over time is the foundation of long-term financial security.
How to Calculate Your Net Worth — Step by Step
List all your assets
Write down everything you own that has monetary value — savings account balance, FDs, mutual fund portfolio, stocks, real estate market value, PPF/EPF corpus, gold, and vehicle resale value.
Add up the total asset value
Sum every asset. Don't use purchase price — use the current market or liquidation value. For real estate, use a realistic resale estimate, not the price you paid.
List all your liabilities
Write down every outstanding debt — home loan balance, car loan balance, personal loan, education loan, credit card dues, and any informal borrowings.
Add up the total liabilities
Sum the outstanding principal on every debt. Use the current outstanding balance, not the original loan amount.
Subtract liabilities from assets
Net Worth = Total Assets − Total Liabilities. The result is your net worth. A positive number means you own more than you owe. A negative number means the reverse — but that's fixable.

Track Real Progress
Monthly income and savings alone don't reveal the full picture. Net worth shows whether you're actually building wealth — or just running in place.
Project the Future
See where you'll stand in 5, 10, or 20 years based on your SIP contributions, loan repayments, income growth, and surplus savings.
Make Smarter Decisions
Understand which assets are compounding your wealth and which liabilities are dragging it down — so every financial choice is an informed one.
